Even dogs don\u2019t go down there,&#8221; says resident.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BEGIN listen now odiogo.com #3 --><\/p>\n<div id=\"odiogo_frame\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\n\/\/ <![CDATA[\n            var artID = document.URL.split('id=');\n            showInitialOdiogoReadNowFrame('396242, 401831, 401889, 401989, 401877, 401914, 401946, 402019', artID[1], 290, 0);\n\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><\/div>\n<p><!-- END listen now odiogo.com #3 --> <!--[ Block Spacer Start ]--> <!--[ Block Spacer End ]--> <!--[ Left Content Start ]--><\/p>\n<div id=\"body_val\">The haredi enclave of Ramat Shlomo in northeast Jerusalem was buzzing with commotion on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after an Interior Ministry decision to approve 1,600 new homes in the neighborhood drew international condemnation and became fodder for national and international news outlets alike.<\/p>\n<p>The quiet neighborhood\u2019s daily routine was suddenly shattered by the appearance of the press horde \u2013 reporters and camera crews \u2013 who had come to get a first-hand look at the piece of land where the now-infamous construction plans are set to take place.<\/p>\n<p>Interactions between the two groups were unavoidably awkward, as men came out of their yeshivot to stare at the news crews and their equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you all get up here without passports?\u201d an older haredi man, who had wandered up to a group of reporters asked wryly. \u201cDon\u2019t you know this is Palestinian territory?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the reporters laughed him off, the man took a more serious tone, and pointing down into the valley where the 1,600 news housing units are planned to go up, said, \u201cWho else is going to build down there? Even dogs don\u2019t go down there, only squirrels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Former Jerusalem Mayor] Teddy Kolleck, who was the leftist of the leftists, would be turning over in his grave right now, if he knew that this was even being debated,\u201d the man continued. \u201cIf we can\u2019t build here, then tell me, please, where can we build?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli Diskin, a Ramat Shlomo resident and real estate developer who was involved with the first wave of building that swept the neighborhood in the early 1990s, told The Jerusalem Post that 1,600 new housing units \u201cwouldn\u2019t even be enough\u201d to deal with the overflowing population of the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it even needs to be explained,\u201d Diskin said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConstruction in Ramat Shlomo began in 1993, and now there are 2,200 families or roughly 16,000 people living here,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach family averages between seven and eight members, and frankly, there is nowhere left for people to live. If someone gets married, if they have more kids, where are they supposed to go? They have to leavethe neighborhood,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cAnd if we can\u2019t build here, where are we supposed to build?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diskin\u2019s sentiments were echoed by every other Ramat Shlomo resident who spoke to the Post on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this is not an inseparable part of Jerusalem, than what is?\u201d asked Pini Gamliel, a shopkeeper on the neighborhood\u2019s HaAdmor M\u2019Lubavitch Street. \u201cWhere do they want us to put our houses?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, at a Chabad synagogue constructed as an exact duplicate of the entrance to the hassidic movement\u2019s famous yeshiva at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, Mendy Hechtman told the Post that he felt American diplomats and others critical of the decision to continue building in Ramat Shlomo should come and see the neighborhood for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce you get here, you can easily see that this is simply another neighborhood in Jerusalem,\u201d Hechtman said. \u201cBut the media makes it seem like this is some kind of far-removed settlement, when in reality it\u2019s right next to Ramot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later on Wednesday afternoon, MK Danny Danon (Likud) toured the neighborhood before speaking to reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Obama and Vice President Biden will not dictate to Israel when and where to build in Jerusalem,\u201d Danon said. \u201cI have no doubt that in the next few years, there will be thousands of new housing units in Ramat Shlomo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Palestinians are trying to turn every construction project into an international incident, even though construction in Jerusalem is as natural as it would be in any other city.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ramat Shlomo residents don\u2019t understand what all the fuss is about (The Jerusalem Post 11.3.2010)<\/p>","protected":false},"author":9,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"zakra_page_container_layout":"customizer","zakra_page_sidebar_layout":"customizer","zakra_remove_content_margin":false,"zakra_sidebar":"customizer","zakra_transparent_header":"customizer","zakra_logo":0,"zakra_main_header_style":"default","zakra_menu_item_color":"","zakra_menu_item_hover_color":"","zakra_menu_item_active_color":"","zakra_menu_active_style":"","zakra_page_header":true,"footnotes":""},"categories":[29],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-767","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uutiset"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
